Once a month, my best friend and I get together to make handmade glitter and glam, affectionately known as "Bestie Craft Day." This month we made Christmas candles using epsom salt (a.k.a. snow) to decorate our homes, and to give as gifts.
The gospel imagery of our little craft using "salt and light" hit me five minutes ago at the end of my morning Jesus date. This post felt too basic, so I prayed for "words to speak" to spice it up...and the words of Jesus hit me like a train (true story, that just happened!).
Jesus told us to be "salt and light." He said:
13 "Let me tell you why you are here. You're here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You've lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage.
14 "Here's another way to put it: You're here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We're going public with this, as public as a city on a hill.15 If I make you light-bearers, you don't think I'm going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I'm putting you on a light stand.16 Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you'll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.

Salt & Light.
My mom taught me to start the day by lighting a candle, "the Light of God," and welcoming the Lord into my home, my heart, and my life. I watched her do this every morning, and now that's how I start my day. Physically putting the Lord first in my day, helps me put God first in my life. It shapes my perspective and strengthens my faith.
If this is a project you'd like to embark on...here's the step-by-step:
- Snag white pillar candles (60% off at Joann's!)
- Place a rubber band around the top.
- Brush modpodge adhesive up to the rubber band.
- Roll the candle in epsom salt.
- Remove the rubber band (for a clean line).
- Candles dry over night.
- Ribbon.
- Let them remind you that you are the salt and the light of the world!
“You are the light of the world—
like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.
{Matthew 5:14, NIV}
